New traffic lights going up around St. Joseph County

(Jon Zimney/95.3 MNC)

Don’t be surprised if you see some traffic light changes around St. Joseph County. INDOT is adding new lights to some busy intersections, especially along State Road 23. A total of 37 traffic lights around the county will be changed and many of them will include a new blinking yellow arrow.

A spokesperson for INDOT tells WSBT that they plan to get 10 done this week alone. The blinking yellow arrow allows left turns without a protected green and has proven to make intersections much safer. In fact, INDOT says there’s a 25% severe crash reduction at intersections with the yellow turn lights; on top of decreasing traffic congestion.

It’s unknown how long it will take to get all of lights changed out.
