Voting past 6 p.m. allowed if Hoosiers have trouble at the polls in November

Indiana voters will still have the option of turning to the courts if they run into trouble at the polling place on Election Day. Legislators voted last year to ban extensions of voting past 6 p.m. unless a polling place failed to open on time.

Federal Judge Richard L. Young has blocked that law from taking effect for the November election. His ruling says that limit is too narrow when the right to vote is at stake.

Extending voting hours is rare, but a judge extended voting in Monroe County two years ago when some precincts ran out of ballots.
