In a ceremony Thursday, President Donald Trump honored former Notre Dame Head Football Coach Lou Holtz with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, calling his political ally “one of the greatest coaches in American history.”

The college football Hall of Famer in turn said the honor was “especially meaningful” coming from Trump, whom he called “the greatest president of my lifetime.”

Holtz was announced as a recipient in September. The ceremony took place Thursday morning in the Oval Office.

The University of Notre Dame issued a statement Thursday about the award, which you can read by clicking here.

Holtz has a 34-year coaching history, including the 1988 national title while at Notre Dame. He’s led six different programs to bowl games.
