Food industry jobs hit especially hard by December’s Michigan jobless numbers

Restaurants are reopening to a degree across the state soon, but Michigan lost roughly 60,000 leisure and hospitality jobs in December.

Michigan lost 154,000 jobs last month according to new state data, and just under 40% of them came from the leisure and hospitality sector.

Those jobs were hit especially hard by the partial shutdown of the state’s economy that began in November to help fight the spread of COVID-19.

December was the second month in a row that the state’s unemployment rate increased.
