Mishawaka common council approved millions in new stimulus bonds to fund several capital projects

You can expect to see a lot of construction in Mishawaka very soon. The common council approved millions in new stimulus bonds last night to fund several capital projects.

These bonds are phase three of Mishawaka’s stimulus plan. They started with individual services, then small businesses and now these $50-million in bonds.

The project with the biggest price tag is Ironworks Plaza that is set to be built in Beutter Park. It resembles South Bend’s Howard Park with an ice rink, café and an event center.

The city budgeted more than $20 million for the project, but the bid the city awarded today is about $4 million less, allowing some phases of other projects, such as park improvements, to move forward sooner.

Some of those savings could also be put towards the second biggest project on the list, which is a new building to house Fire Station 2.

The current building sits near the intersection of Main and McKinley Highway and is way too small for current needs. The new building is just in the design phase, but would be built just a few hundred feet away in front of Liberty Elementary School.

Some of the projects, like new street infrastructure, are already underway. Other smaller projects include improvements to several city parks and an expansion of the Riverwalk.
