You may have heard about the tubing accident in North Carolina, where four people died and four more were rescued. Two of those people were from LaPorte, Indiana.

The group went over a low-head dam, near the Virginia border on the Dan River in Rockingham County. The dam belongs to Duke Energy. A substation technician spotted the group and called 911.

The people from Indiana who died are Antonio Ramon, 30, and Sophie Wilson, 15. Another teenager from LaPorte was part of the group that was rescued.

“When most people see a large dam they recognize that’s a danger,” said Tobi Addis, one of the people involved in last week’s search, told WSOC Channel 9, in North Carolina. “A low-head dam, even as short as three or four feet, can create underwater currents that can keep you underneath the water over and over again.”

The dam had an eight-foot drop.

Police said no one in the group was wearing a life jacket. They started out tied together, but were not tied when they went over.
