Five Republican senators won’t support spending legislation without border funding

A group of five Republican senators has committed that they will not support any spending legislation in Congress from here on out unless it contains money to help secure the southern border with Mexico.

Sen. Mike Braun of Indiana is among those senators. He told Fox News this week that it is imperative the southern border be secured after he said he witnessed “many atrocities” during a visit there earlier this year.

Braun is joined by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT).

“This is a man-made crisis made by a one-man wrecking ball named Joe Biden,” Braun said of the president. “Because ‘it was Trump, we’re not going to keep those policies in place’.”

Braun highlighted increases in illegal border crossings along with drug and human smuggling occurring along the border, which is something that DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas did not deny when he was questioned by a Senate committee on Tuesday. He was asked to grade himself by GOP senators on the committee.

“I’m a tough grader on myself,” Mayorkas said. “And I give myself an ‘A’ for effort, investment in mission, and support of our workforce.”

Over 160,000 illegal migrants were encountered by border patrol officers in October, a figure much higher than any month from late 2019 into early 2021.

Braun, along with the four other aforementioned senators, is insisting that funding be secured in any spending packages moving forward to finish the construction of the border wall started under the Trump administration.

Braun does not believe the bill will survive the Senate if the $2 trillion measure passes the House.

“It shouldn’t because Sen. Kyrsten Sinema has made an issue on the finance part of not raising taxes, Sen. Joe Manchin on the spending,” Braun said. “Hopefully they hold true.”
