The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has reviewed the initial investigation into the death of 51-year-old Dante Kittrell, who died more than two weeks ago after he pointed a gun at police officers during a stand-off near Coquillard Elementary School after threatening to harm himself.

The Prosecutor’s Office says investigators are still waiting for the results of ballistic testing which are expected as early as this week. Once that happenes, investigators will present their full case to the Prosecutor.

While the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has reviewed the initial investigation into the death of Dante Kittrell, 51, of South Bend, the joint investigation by the St. Joseph County Police Department and Mishawaka Police Department is still ongoing.

Pursuant to protocol, these departments had agreed to conduct the investigation because Mr. Kittrell died as a result of a shooting by officers with the South Bend Police Department on July 29, 2022.

The Prosecutor’s Office has learned from the investigators that they are waiting for the results of ballistic testing. Generally, all ballistic testing in St. Joseph County is conducted at the Crime Lab located within the South Bend Police Department. However, to ensure the integrity of the investigation and the Crime Lab, the testing related to Mr. Kittrell’s death is also being examined by Gary Lind, an independent expert with Firearm Forensics. Mr. Lind and Firearm Forensics is not associated with the South Bend Police Department.

According to the investigators, the results of the ballistic testing are expected sometime next week. Investigators will then present the full case to the Prosecutor’s Office. After that review, the Prosecutor’s Office will discuss the findings with Mr. Kittrell’s family and the South Bend Police Department before releasing any further information.
