The City of South Bend is taking steps toward a potential lawsuit against developer Dave Matthews for failing to open a full-service grocery store and pharmacy inside the new high-rise at 300 East LaSalle Avenue.
South Bend Common Council member and Redevelopment Commission Vice-President Troy Warner tells ABC 57 News that Matthews has missed multiple deadlines for six years.
The city is asking for $7.5 million dollars back from Matthews.
Matthews says he was forced to extend the project deadline over and over due to the COVID-19 pandemic, material shortages and a lack of workers. Still, he says he’s working to get the project done.
The South Bend Tribune reports Matthews may also have to pay back an additional $5 million dollars to the state that was give to him by the South Bend-Elkhart Regional Development Authority for the same project. That group is meeting, soon, to talk about the issue.

Thanks Stupid Bend for building another white elephant in downtown. Do you remember the College Football Hall of Fame structure ? This Matthews building shouldn’t have been built there in the first place. It could have easily worked successfully around Notre Dame.
The LaSalle Ave. building could be used to house more mentally challenged homeless people, that wander the streets of downtown.
