Winter Weather Advisory in effect through 7 p.m. on Thursday

(Photo supplied/National Weather Service of Northern Indiana)

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20.

The lake effect snow continues through Thursday afternoon. This is when 3 to 6 inches of accumulation is expected under the band of snow. As the band wobbles from west to east at times, areas right around the band will see lower totals of 1-3″. There will likely be a pretty sharp cutoff between where the snow is heavy and where there’s almost no snow falling. Keep that in mind for traveling tonight and tomorrow because some areas will be completely fine for travel and other spots may have whiteout conditions at times. The main focus for the heaviest snow will be Berrien County, far northern LaPorte County, St Joseph County, Cass County and possibly far western Elkhart County.

It looks like our snow chances come down by the end of the week. Temperatures begin to moderate at that point, too. Highs will climb back into the 30s by the weekend.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM EST /3 PM CST/ THIS
AFTERNOON TO 7 PM EST /6 PM CST/ THURSDAY...

* WHAT...Lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations between
2 and 7 inches. The highest amounts are expected in Berrien
  County, MI.

* WHERE...Portions of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.

* WHEN...From 4 PM EST /3 PM CST/ this afternoon to 7 PM EST /6 PM
  CST/ Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will
become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult. The
hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening and
Thursday morning commutes. Areas of blowing snow are possible on
  Thursday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Slow down and use caution while traveling. The latest road
conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by
calling 5 1 1.

During lake effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally
heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away. Visibilities can
also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather,
visibility, and road conditions.
