A teenage girl was injured Wednesday morning when a suspect fleeing Elkhart Police struck her near a bus stop during a pursuit that later ended in Marshall County.
Elkhart Police say the incident began around 7:26 a.m., when officers found a stolen Ford Edge parked at 204 Middlebury Street with a man asleep inside. As officers attempted a felony stop, the driver fled eastbound on Middlebury Street, leading police on a pursuit.
Around 7:41 a.m., the suspect vehicle turned onto Eden Street and drove toward a group of teenagers waiting for a bus near Eden and Dale streets. Police initially reported the 15-year-old girl made contact with the rear of the SUV while trying to avoid it. However, after reviewing video evidence, investigators learned the front of the vehicle struck her, dragging her several feet by her backpack.
Officers quickly ended the pursuit at 7:44 a.m. due to safety concerns. The girl was treated at the scene, but later transported to the hospital for further evaluation after complaining of pain.
Indiana State Police later located the suspect and the stolen vehicle near Plymouth in Marshall County. The driver was taken into custody.
Elkhart Police say the case will be forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review of formal charges.
