It’s harvest time across northern Indiana, and experts are warning that the dusty conditions could impact farmers’ health.

The dust stirred up by combines and grain transfers can trigger respiratory issues known as “Farmer’s Lung,” caused by breathing in particles from moldy hay or grain.

WSBT says symptoms may start as coughing, runny nose and itchy eyes, but they can progress to fever, muscle aches or even permanent lung damage.

LaGrange County Extension Educator Jeff Burbrink says farmers in combines for long hours face higher risk.

Families are urged to watch for signs in loved ones and encourage medical care.
