A Nappanee man charged with attempting to murder his own mother will undergo psychiatric evaluations.
21-year-old Christopher Hochstetler is charged with attempted murder, a Level One felony, and attempted arson, a Level Two felony.
According to court documents, deputies responded to a call around 1 a.m. after Hochstetler reported trying to set his home on fire while his mother was inside.
According to The Goshen News, investigators say he used a candle lighter and toilet paper to start the fire. His mother was awakened by smoke alarms and escaped unharmed.
During a pretrial conference, Hochstetler’s attorney filed notice of an insanity defense, and the judge ordered competency and insanity evaluations.
His jury trial remains scheduled for March 2, pending results.
