Indiana BMV reminds drivers of new vehicle color change law taking effect in 2026

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is reminding Hoosiers of a change to state law that will take effect Jan. 1, 2026, requiring vehicle owners to report certain color changes to their vehicles.
The law requires vehicle owners to notify the BMV when the color of a passenger vehicle is changed through painting, the installation of a partial or full vinyl wrap, or the removal of a wrap.
vehicle owners who fail to report a color change within 30 days may receive a warning from law enforcement. If a vehicle’s color is altered after it is used in the commission of a crime and the BMV was not notified, the owner could face a Class C misdemeanor charge.
The BMV says drivers can update their vehicle color by visiting a BMV branch, using a BMV Connect kiosk during a scheduled registration renewal, or logging into their myBMV account online.
