A 10-year-old girl was shot and killed in Mishawaka, and a 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with the incident, according to police.

Officers with the Mishawaka Police Department were dispatched to the 300 block of Taylor Street on Saturday, Feb. 7, after receiving a report of a child who had been shot. When officers arrived, they found the girl suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators interviewed family members and others as part of the initial investigation. Police later arrested 17-year-old Jacob Olvera on preliminary charges of possession of a machine gun, dangerous possession of a firearm, and criminal recklessness, a Level 6 felony.

Olvera was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail, where he is being held pending the filing of formal charges by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office. Police said Olvera is not related to the victim.

An autopsy for the child was scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 8.

Authorities also said there is no ongoing threat to the community related to the incident.
