The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a 17-year-old male dead.
According to Elkhart Police, officers were patrolling the area of High Dive Park Pavilion at 500 East Beardsley Avenue just after 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8, when an officer noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in the lot after the park was closed and after Indiana’s curfew for minors.
Officers made contact with the adult driver and several passengers, including juveniles. A second officer arrived to assist. During the interaction, police say the situation escalated, and at approximately 1:49 a.m., both officers discharged their firearms.
One male inside the vehicle was struck by gunfire. Officers rendered first aid until Elkhart City Fire Department medics arrived. The teen was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
Investigators say multiple handguns were recovered from inside and around the vehicle, along with the firearms used by the officers. One officer suffered a minor injury during the incident but did not require medical treatment. No other injuries were reported, and police say there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Elkhart County Homicide Unit was activated per protocol and is leading the investigation. The name of the deceased is being withheld due to his age.
Both officers involved have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy while the investigation and internal review continue.
Authorities say the investigation is in its early stages and ask for patience as the process moves forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Elkhart County Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825.
