An Edwardsburg man was arrested after authorities say he caused a rear-end crash on State Road 19, fled the scene on foot and was later found to be impaired.

The crash happened around 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, on State Road 19, south of State Line Road.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, 47-year-old Jonothan Walker of Edwardsburg, Michigan, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado southbound behind a Ford F-150 when investigators say he was following too closely and struck the rear of the other pickup.

After the collision, Walker’s truck left the roadway, traveled through a crop field and crashed into an AEP electrical tower. Deputies said Walker then ran from the scene but was later located and taken into custody.

Authorities said Walker showed signs of impairment and was arrested on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated causing a crash, operating while intoxicated while endangering his passenger and leaving the scene of a crash.

A passenger in Walker’s truck complained of chest pain and was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment. The driver of the other pickup was not injured.

Walker was booked into the Elkhart County Jail. The crash remains under investigation by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.
