GARY, Ind. (AP) — An official says two people drowned and another was hospitalized after swimming in Lake Michigan while beaches in the Gary area were under a hazard warning.

TV station WLS reports the Gary Fire Department received a call about a drowning at the Wells Street Beach, near the eastern edge of Gary, around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Mark Jones, chief of operations for the Gary Fire Department, tells local media two men drowned. He says they were among five people pulled from the water. One was in stable condition at a hospital. Two others declined to be taken to hospitals.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the men who died as 26-year-old Kyle Reibly and 37-year-old David Alden II, both of Griffith.

The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazards statement for northwest Indiana warning that life-threatening waves and currents were expected. The statement says beach visitors should stay out of the water.
