Retired Elkhart police officer identified as victim of car vs motorcycle crash

A retired Elkhart Police Department officer died after a car hit his motorcycle in Elkhart Thursday afternoon.

57-year-old Michael Posthuma of Bristol was riding his motorcycle in the 1900 block of Hively Avenue at about 2:15 p.m. Thursday. A vehicle turning out of a business made a left turn in front of him, according to the Elkhart Truth.

Posthuma’s bike hit the driver’s side of the vehicle. He died from his injuries after being thrown from the bike. Posthuma was identified Friday morning, according to the Elkhart Truth.

He was a 26-year veteran of the Elkhart police force. He had retired in 2011. Police are still investigating the crash.
