Bicyclist dies after being struck by car on U.S. 20 in LaPorte County

A man riding his bicycle before midnight Saturday night was struck and killed by a car near Michigan City.

The crash happened on U.S. 20 east of the Porter/LaPorte County line at about 11:40 p.m. Saturday, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, they found a 50-year-old man lying in the center turn lane. He was not breathing had no pulse. The man was rushed to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigators determined that the man was struck from behind by a silver Audi while riding in the left passing lane. The bicyclist was not wearing any reflective clothing and had no lighting on the bike. The crash also happened in a very dark area with no street lights.

The driver of the car and two passengers were not hurt. Alcohol and speed were not factors, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office.
