A South Bend man is lucky to be alive after he drove his car off a bridge and onto its roof over thirty feet below.

A silver Cadillac was heading westbound over the Cooper Bridge at about 6 p.m. Wednesday. The car crossed the median, drove over the barrier of the bridge, and fell over 30 feet onto is roof, according to ABC 57.

The car ended up on the banks of the St. Joe River just off of Northside Boulevard. Emergency crews had to extricate the driver, a 65-year-old man, through the back doors.

Forsberg was unresponsive when crews arrived, but he’s now in stable condition at Memorial Hospital after being taken there via ambulance for internal and head injuries.

South Bend police say alcohol was a factor and will face charges if his blood alcohol test shows he exceeded the legal limit.
