An attempted murder charge has been filed after a man allegedly attacked a St. Mary’s College student trying to help the homeless.

Court documents say that 43-year-old Dwayne Newson suddenly attacked the victim Tuesday morning as she volunteered at Broadway Christian Church’s soup kitchen on Carroll Street.

She was stabbed and was taken to the hospital with a life-threatening injury, but she’s now in stable condition.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Newsom with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Battery, and Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon. All three are felonies that carry a maximum 62 year prison term if Newsom is convicted on all three.
