Names of suspect, officer in South Bend police-involved shooting revealed

The names of the officer and suspect in the officer-involved shooting, Tuesday night, at Portage and Wilbur Streets in South Bend have been made known.

Police were called there on the report of an unwanted person. The suspect is identified as 27-year-old Terrance Eppenger.

Eyewitnesses told authorities Eppenger assaulted the officer and, in the midst of that confrontation, the officer, Samuel Chaput, took out his firearm and shot Eppenger.

The suspect remains in critical condition in the hospital. Chaput was treated for injuries at the hospital and later released.
