Man killed in Monday night shooting in South Bend

The Memorial Day weekend ended violently in South Bend.

South Bend police were called to a reported shooting on the city’s northwest side just after 11 p.m. Monday night. Officers arrived in the 600 block of North Studebaker Street and discovered a man shot to death. That victim has died but his name has not been released.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit was called to investigate, and believe the shooting happened outside of a home. The search for suspects is underway, and two search warrants were issued Tuesday morning while the scene was still active.

South Bend Police were also sent to the area of Mishawaka and Roberts Street on the report of shots fired. This was reported about an hour after the Studebaker Street shooting. Police were unable to locate a victim and it’s not clear if the two shootings were related. The investigation has not revealed any suspects as of Tuesday morning.

The victim was identified Tuesday morning as 43-year-old Melvin Muhammad. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
