A gas leak was reported in downtown Elkhart around 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 21.
The leak was reported around 2:45 p.m. in the area of Jackson Blvd. and 3rd Street.
NIPSCO says the leak was caused by a car crashing into the side of an apartment building in the 200 block of West Jackson Blvd., according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57.
3rd Street was closed from Jefferson Street to Lexington Street. Second Street and Jackson Boulevard were also closed in that area, ABC 57 reported.
Crews were evacuating people from some buildings in that area out of an abundance of caution.
Drivers were advised to avoid the area until the all-clear was given.
