Some members of the Elkhart Common Council say they’d support hiring a private firm to investigate the city’s police force over excessive force allegations.

The South Bend Tribune reports that would be discussed if the U.S. Department of Justice decides not to conduct their own review.

Mayor Tim Neese first asked the State Police, and the D.O.J., to investigate after a video surfaced of Elkhart police officers beating a handcuffed man.

Republican Councilman Richard Shively told the paper he’s unsure how much time the Council should give Neese to resolve the situation, but adds they’re “not happy with the results” so far.
