The 82 year-old driver of a church bus in Lake County faces OWI charges after running off the road and injuring several of his passengers.

It happened on the Toll Road when the bus, owned by the Jesus Saves Missionary Baptist Church in Gary was eastbound at mile marked 9 point 6, on their way back from a trip to Chicago. Indiana State Police Troopers report that the elderly driver, Wilton Carr, drove straight off the roadway into the space between two guard rails. That lifted the front wheels off the road and caused a crash that threw some of the 47 people on the bus from their seats.

Five passengers were taken to a hospital. Carr faces four different OWI charges in the crash.
