Former Michigan City Police Officer sentenced in rape case

A former Michigan City police officer convicted of raping a woman with the mental capacity of a young child has learned his fate.

Thomas Jackson, 55, was sentenced to 36 years in prison.

was found guilty of three counts of rape in December, according to The News-Dispatch.

It was a second trial for Jackson, ordered after the jury in his first trial, last April, failed to come to to a decision.

The woman who prosecutors say he raped had an IQ of just 48.

The News-Dispatch reports Jackson cried as he apologized to the victim’s family.
