Elkhart man with a history of robbery gets 47 years for latest spree

An Elkhart man has been sentenced to 47 years in prison on robbery and weapons charges.

55 year-old Rex Hammond was convicted after a 4-day jury trial in April.

He was convicted on 5 counts of Hobbs Act Robbery and 3 firearm counts.

The District Court Judge gave him 564 months in prison and ordered him to pay more than $2,600 in restitution.

Hammond was found guilty of going on a gas station and liquor store robbery spree in October 2017 that involved four different communities. He has already spent the majority of the past 40 years robbing people or serving time for those crimes, according to court documents.
