Thinking of going for a swim in Lake Michigan? Think twice before you do it.

The reasons go deeper than just the riptides and dangerous swimming conditions. Tyler Sebree from ABC 57 says the waters of Lake Michigan have plummeted to dangerously cold levels.

The large waves that have made the water unstable for swimmers have also caused what’s caused an up-welling of colder water from the deeper parts of the lake, dropping lake temperatures Tuesday morning to the 40s that had been in the 70s just one day earlier.

Water that cold is extremely dangerous and can become life-threatening very quickly.

Sebree recommends waiting until warmer conditions return this weekend, which should allow Lake Michigan some time to recover enough to be tolerable again.
