We’re on pace to see a record number of drownings in The Great Lakes this year, and Lake Michigan is leading the way.

At this point last year, 15 drownings had been reported on Lake Michigan. As of Sunday, there had been 27 drownings reported in the lake, an increase of 80 percent. That’s also 3 more than the other four Great Lakes have had this year combined.

The 51 drownings on the lakes represent what ABC 57 Meteorologist Tyler Sebree calls “alarmingly high” for this point in the year, and official numbers from the U.S. Coast Guard say the number should actually be even higher.
