Man sentenced to 60 years in prison for wife’s stabbing death

A South Bend man was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the murder of his wife in April of 2017.

Carl Gathright, 49, appeared before a St. Joseph County Superior Court Judge on Wednesday, July 31, to learn his fate for the for stabbing death of his wife, Argusta Gathright, which took place in the 4400 block of Ashard Drive in April 2017.

A jury had previously found Gaathright guilty of murder back in May.

At the sentencing hearing, two of the victim’s children spoke to the court.

In determining the 60-year sentence, the court weighed aggravating and mitigating factors,
including the fact that the crime happened in the presence of three minor children and that
the defendant was on bond for a pending domestic violence offense with the same victim
at the time this offense was committed.
