Driver in fatal winter crash pleads guilty

The driver in a fatal crash that killed a woman who had just left her bible study group has pleaded guilty without a plea agreement.

St. Joseph County Court records say Alan Tarchala entered the plea to charges including causing death while operating a motor vehicle while under the influence.

The crash happened on January 26 in the area of Bremen Highway and Petro Drive. Tarchala lost control of his Jeep and struck a vehicle head-on that was driven by a woman who suffered serious injuries. Her passenger, 60 year-old Sherry Amiel, was killed.

Tarchala will be sentenced on October 16th.
