More than 16,000 Indiana Michigan Power customers were left without electricity after strong thunderstorms blew through the region late Friday night, Sep. 27.

The outages were scattered across southwest Michigan and northern Indiana.

Indiana Michigan Power released the following information about the outages:

A full contingent of I&M crews is in the field assessing damage and restoring power and are being joined by contractors to safely restore all customers.

I&M encourages all of our customers to be aware of possible storm damage in their area.

  • Be aware of the possibility of downed power lines. Stay away from those downed lines and report any hazards.
  • Be cautious of slick roads and any debris that may have landed in the roadway.
  • Be aware of the possibility traffic lights may not be functioning and take caution if first
responders are directing traffic. This is especially true around the University of Notre Dame as a large crowd is expected due to a home football game.
  • Please keep in mind that given the heavy rains, some trees may be saturated and could drop limbs or fall hours after the storm ended.

The approximate number of outages throughout I&M’s Northern areas as of 5 p.m. were:

  • Elkhart area: 1,600
  • South Bend area: 4,600
  • Southwest Michigan area: 50

I&M expects to have power restored to all Elkhart customers by noon Sunday and to all South Bend customers by 11 p.m. Sunday.
