How to react when a deer runs in front of your vehicle

Deer are on the move right now, and there are ways to safely respond if you hit one while behind the wheel.

Deer hits are a possibility in our part of the country year-round, but this time of year deer are in the rut. That, combined with the beginning of some of the hunting seasons in the region, has them on the move more than usual.

Most crashes result in around 43 hundred dollars in damages. Highway safety officials recommend calmly braking when a deer runs out, and NOT swerving because swerving can create a bigger problem. Don’t change lanes, and remember usually hitting the deer is the safest option.

Twelve deer crashes each year turn fatal. Also, don’t approach a wounded deer — because it might attack you.
