Elkhart Police look to increase efficiency with new reporting system

On Monday, the Elkhart Police Department began transitioning to a new method of crime measurement and data reporting with the federal government.

Instead of using the previous Uniform Crime Reporting method, they are switching to the National Incident-Based Reporting System. It’s the system used by the FBI for collecting and compiling crime data across the country, and is more detailed than the old system.

Officials say the new method should provide a more complete picture of crime and cover a broad range of offenses, while increasing police transparency.
