Some Berrien County schools could start before Labor Day

Some students in Michigan might start school before Labor Day in the near future.

Tuesday the state’s Department of Education granted a waiver to the Berrien Regional Educational Service Agency that allows them the option of beginning the school year before the federal holiday.

WNDU reports that 13 of the 15 school districts in the county encouraged the Berrien RESA to apply for the waivers on their behalf.

Not everyone’s thrilled about the idea: The Southwestern Michigan Tourism Council is concerned about losing summer workers to earlier classrooms.
