Man shot on Western Avenue on Monday dies, suspect arrested

The man who was shot in the area of Western Avenue and Kentucky Street has died and a suspect has been taken into custody. The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 16. Elijah Damelle Hereford, 24, died early Tuesday morning.

South Bend Police were able to determine a suspect and worked with the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit who met with relatives of the victim and conducted additional interviews.

The suspect, Malik Barnes, 24, was tracked to an apartment in Elkhart where he was taken into custody on a preliminary charge of murder with a firearm sentencing enhancement as well as an outstanding warrant.
