The future plans for the Nye’s Apple Barn site in St. Joseph are meeting resistance in the community.

The St. Joseph Township Planning Commission heard a proposal this week that would turn the property into a planned unit development, but the neighbors in the area aren’t wild about the idea.

A number of residents have signed a petition opposing any commercialization of the property. John Nye, who owns the property that’s been in his family since the late 1800s, told WNDU that he isn’t commenting on the proposal at this time.

The commission will have 30 days to review the proposal, which would put a commercial property in place to appeal to highway traffic.
