The State of Michigan passed a pair of grim milestones Wednesday in its fight with the coronavirus.

The state reported more than 5,500 new cases, and 45 new deaths. That put the state’s total cases reported beyond 800,000 with more than 17,000 deaths.

Michigan is the 10th most populous state in the nation and becomes the 10th state with 17,000 thousand deaths, and the 11th to exceed 800,000 confirmed cases.

The news isn’t all bad, however: Hospitals around the state reported fewer COVID patients, and other numbers suggest that the latest wave has crested as infections begin to slow down.

Michigan’s ongoing outbreak is still considered the worst in the US, according to the CDC.
