Upgrades planned for two railroad crossings in St. Joseph County this month

(Tommie Lee/95.3 MNC)

Pioneer Lines and St. Joseph County will be upgrading the railroad crossings at two separate locations by eliminating the current STOP signs and installing flashing lights and bell alarm system which will activate when a train is nearing the intersection.

The two crossings planned for this year are Ash Road and Bittersweet Road, and in order to perform the work necessary to upgrade the crossings road closures will be required.

Work is expected to begin at the Bittersweet Road Crossing on Monday May 17 and carry through until May 21. The work moves to Ash Road on Monday May 24 and should be finished by Friday, May 28.

Bittersweet Road will be closed beginning May 17 through May 21.

Motorists will be directed to use Cleveland Road to Capital Avenue or Ash Road then South to McKinley Highway as the prescribed detour route.

Ash Road is anticipated to closed the following Monday from the completion of the Bittersweet crossing.

During this closure motorists will be directed to utilize Cleveland Road or McKinley Highway to Capital Avenue for truck traffic, or Bittersweet for normal to light vehicular traffic.
