The architect credited with helping make the Chicago skyline what it is today, as well as designing DoubleTree hotel in downtown South Bend has passed away.

81-year-old Helmut Jahn died when he was struck by two vehicles while riding his bicycle Saturday afternoon.

The South Bend Tribune reports Jahn was riding his bicycle and went through a stop sign at a T-shaped intersection and was struck. He died at the scene. It was back in 1982 when Jahn designed the big hotel and bank center at Michigan and Washington streets in South Bend.

He’s also the architect of the original Saint Mary’s College’s Angela Athletic Facility, which has since been renovated and expanded.
