A child is in grave condition at an area hospital and a man is in jail facing multiple charges for the beating that sent him there.

19 year-old Christian Maradiaga is being held on counts of domestic battery, battery on a person younger than 14, interfering with the reporting of a crime, and criminal confinement. He was arrested on Thursday after investigators were called to Elkhart General Hospital where the 4 year-old victim was being treated.

Maradiaga was arrested at an apartment on Toledo Road in Elkhart.

On Friday, the County Prosecutor’s Office said the child’s prognosis was “not optimistic.”
