Victim of Columbia City explosion identified

The man who died in last month’s warehouse explosion in Columbia City has been identified.

On May 22, large flames and dark black smoke filled the air just south of US 30. The entire city could feel the explosion.

Indiana State Police say 34-year-old Zachary Sparkman was in the back of the warehouse, where the explosion happened. He was unable to escape.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office says a gas valve had a leak, close to where Sparkman — a known smoker — was standing.

A final autopsy is still pending.
