Indiana State Police issuing body cameras to troopers

he Indiana State Police are issuing body cameras to all of their troopers.

The move comes after Governor Holcomb mandated a body camera system last August. The process began in June and all cameras are expected to be distributed and in use by August.

Right now there are 230 cameras active in the field, out of 800 who anticipate being equipped with them. That number includes uniformed troopers and sergeants on patrol, Capitol Police, and some of the state’s Special Operations units.

The system will cost an estimated $15 million to operate over five years. It will include sensors that automatically turn on the cameras whenever a trooper draws their handgun or a patrol car’s emergency lights are activated.
