A salesperson from a car dealership in Hobart is seriously injured after being involved in a crash where he said he was “held against his will” on Wednesday.

State police say a man named LaDarien Gregory, 29, took a 2009 Kia Borrego for a test drive with the salesperson in it but later refused to let the salesperson out of the SUV.

They say Gregory kept driving on the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/94) in Gary. At about 4:30 pm, the salesperson called 911. While he was on the phone with dispatchers, police say Gregory accelerated and slammed into the back of a semi.

The Borrego eventually caught on fire. The salesperson was trapped in the SUV, but Gregory got out and walked away.

Investigators say they were able to rescue the salesperson, but that person was seriously injured and had to be taken to Loyola University Hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

The salesperson works at Bosco Family Motors in Hobart.

Gregory was arrested nearby. First, he was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries. Gregory has since been taken to the Lake County Jail.

The Lake County Prosecutor will determine what the charges will be against Gregory.
