An inmate has died in the St. Joseph County Jail.

33-year-old Joseph Valentine, of South Bend, was found unresponsive in his cell on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 24.

Jail staff and EMTs tried to save Valentine, but could not. He died before he could be taken to a hospital.

Indiana State Police are now looking into what happened.

An autopsy is set for Tuesday.
