A South Bend teacher has been accused of raping and threatening to kill a 16-year-old girl.

John Doty, 35, is charged with two counts of rape, six counts of child seduction and one count of attempted rape — all felonies, reports the Times of Northwest Indiana.

Doty was most recently a science teacher at Career and Success Academy South Bend.

Police were contacted on Jan. 4. On that day, the girl told her guardians she was going to meet up with a female teacher to give her a gift. Suspicious, the guardians used a GPS to monitor her travel — and caught her with Doty, who quickly sped away in his car.

The girl later told police she had grown close to Doty, as he helped her with personal issues and regularly gave her rides home from school. Eventually, however, he started assaulting her.

The girl was assaulted on three separate occasions: Dec. 21, Dec. 22, and Jan. 4. On the Dec. 21 incident, the girl told police he threatened to murder her.

Doty self-surrendered at the LaPorte County Jail on Wednesday.
