Catholic Church officials struggling to resolve situation in Michigan that deemed hundreds of baptisms invalid

Catholic Church officials in Michigan are still struggling to resolve a situation that has deemed hundreds of baptisms invalid.

The problem involves language used during the ritual, and covers baptisms performed between 1986 and 1999 by a church official in Troy, Michigan.

Baptism, one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic faith, involves the officiant using the phrase “I baptize” rather than “we baptize.”

That important distinction means hundreds of baptisms, including those of ordained priests, are invalid.

At least 782 Catholics are presumed unbaptized due to the problem.
