The man who was stabbed last month when his vehicle was stolen in Elkhart County has died.

Officials say 73 year-old Wayne Bontrager died on Tuesday, and the Elkhart County Prosecutor has filed an amended charge of murder against Samuel Byfield, 22.

Byfield was arrested on original charges of attempted murder, robbery, battery with a deadly weapon, theft, and leaving the scene of a crash in connection with the stabbing and vehicle theft.

The crash that led to the charges happened on C.R. 26 east of C.R. 22. The missing vehicle was found west of Middlebury.
